These retreats have been held with the goal of allowing those who give of themselves daily to their patients and clients, a chance to decompress & destress, reflect,  and connect with other practitioners.

Camp Stevens

Designed as a community retreat center, Camp Stevens is a peaceful place apart where groups can leave the bustle and distractions of everyday life to deepen relationships with one another and accomplish common goals. The serene, natural setting brings rejuvenation to the spirit, mind and body.

Camp Stevens is available to religious and other non-profit groups for retreats, conferences, and meetings. Two hundred fifty-six acres of forest and meadows offer unhurried serenity, and the comfortable facilities are designed to encourage and support community-oriented programs for groups of 10 to 140 persons.

Nature Preserve
Beyond the central campus, Camp Stevens offers a preserve of more than 220 acres of pristine pine and oak forest, open meadows, small ponds and seasonal streams. The several distinct habitats of the preserve support more than 115 species of birds. You may also see deer, bobcat, wild turkey and coyote. Miles of hiking trails make the area ideal for both short walks and longer hikes, and from the “Upper Meadow” there are spectacular views in every direction.

It is that time of year when you all need to make a decision to do something for yourselves. You are all invited to this year's AHVMA retreat at Camp Stevens, Julian, California. It will be held before the conference from Tuesday night August 23 rd, finishing up Friday morning after breakfast August 26th.

Meeting room

Sleeping Area
5 Person sleeping area with bathroom and shower.

Sleeping bags from REI (freshly cleaned) will be included in your fee. It is warm this time of year in San Diego and you will need very little bedding. You can bring your own bedding if you wish, the fee will be the same for everyone. Ceiling fans are in all sleeping and meeting areas. There is no air conditioning but I have lived here 37 years and turned on our AC less than a dozen times. We will be at around 4000 feet elevation and the days will probably be in the 80 or 90's (dry heat with lots of shady Oak trees to keep us nice and cool, plus a  full sized swimming pool right by our building. This time of year dress would be shorts and T-shirts. Since the weather can change in the mountains, I would suggest some light layers for the evenings.Bugs are not an issue around here.

Lax Sadler Bldg
Lax-Sadler building we will be staying in.
The building we will be occupying as a group is was completed in September of 2010 and is brand spanking new, powered by photovoltaic solar panels. Most of the buildings at the camp have photovoltaic electricity.

Low Roper Course
Low Rope Course Wall.

In your fee is a low rope course for those who wish to have some fun at team building and have a bunch of laughs. It is a two hour program on Thursday morning you can participate in or not. I have done these and found them to be a blast. They also have a high rope course for those who are little more adventurous but you are on you own there.

Horses are next to the property for renting should there be equestrians among the group who want to use their spare time to ride.

There miles of hiking trails, and quiet places to relax and reflect. You can hear yourself yourself breathe, a little different than in the city or your office.

We will have a Native American Prayer Sweat. After the sweat we will all have the option to jump in the nearby pool to cool off, and then have a late night snack  and share our experiences.

Sweat Lodge

There will be time for guided meditation and Tai Chi led by our own Dr. Jim Clark each morning at the Chapel.

Each evening we will have a fire ring  and experiences as a community of healers.

Your fee will also include a five hour session on Forgiveness by Jane Winter, Dr. Ihor Basko's wife. For many years, Jane Winter, M.A.,M.F.C.C., has been a facilitator of personal transformation and awakening. She has twenty five years of experience as a licensed marriage and family counselor; but has moved far beyond traditional therapy. She works with individuals, couples, families and groups. Her love of nature, Kauai and the Hawaiian culture influence her personal development work.

Schedule for this full day work shop Six hours :2 hrs AM / 4 hrs PM

Part I. The Mind  (10am to Noon)  We could start earlier too.

The mind used as an “instrument” is helpful.  When used for spirituality or relationship…or identity, it can get us in trouble.  As veterinarians, you are trained to learn different techniques  and modalities, but rarely encouraged to challenge why we feel stressed and out of sync with life.

Part II. The Heart (1:30 PM to 3:30PM)

Living From the Heart…..using your heart for guidance to the Truth, and door to the “spirit” within.

Part III.  Forgiveness  (4:00 to 6:00 PM)

How to lighten your “load”  through the practice of a forgiveness meditation:  to open the Heart and trust Spirit.

This presentation will include:  guided  and individual meditations, exercises, and group and individual sharing and discussion.

We are blessed to have Jane at our retreat this year.
