Staff

Being a small office, we get to do a little  bit of everything which includes membership processing, conference preparations, Journal advertising, website maintenance, referral directory updates, and Association email. Everyday offers new and exciting challenges and learning experiences. We enjoy working with all of you, and we will be ready and willing to help in any way.

The Staff keeps the AHVMA machine well-oiled and running.

The AHVMA Staff

Nancy Scanlan, DVM Executive Director

Dr. Scanlan joined the AHVMA as a member in 1992. She became executive director in 2010. She lives in the woods, off the grid, with her dog, cats, and husband. Every morning dog and doctor go hiking in the woods surrounding them. She and her husband ski in the winter and hike in the summer in the 3 national forests nearby.

Darlene Knowles, Office Manager

Darlene joined our team in May 2012.  Darlene holds a bachelors degree in Behavioral and Social Sciences. She has extensive experience working with non-profit organizations in Program Management, Grant Writing, and Office Management.  Her office skills are top-notch and she has some interesting ideas that we hope to implement.

Darlene has been a volunteer creating and implementing programs for both children and animals for over 25 years.  As you might have guessed, Darlene is both a social and animal advocate and has volunteered at a local kill shelter where she was a member of the Dog Enrichment Team.  She was the Program Manager for dog training/socialization for  the Pit Bulls at the shelter as their kill rate was over 90%.  Within two months of creating and implementing her program, the  adoption rate  for these hard to adopt dogs increased over 80%.

We look forward to her contributions to AHVMA.

"It is an honor to work for an organization dedicated to treating the whole animal via integrative medicine. Our pets deserve the same option for treatment that I desire for myself " - Darlene

DEDICATED TO ALL THE PIT BULLS KILLED AT MY LOCAL SHELTER: I CRIED EVERYDAY & I AM SO SORRY I COULD NOT SAVE YOU ALL

My love was too much to contain within the DNA that encapsulated my soul. I was told not to express so much love as my physical body was too strong. This seemed to scare some people who did not know the real me. However, you understood and did what you could. I had so much love to give and you loved me back. Had I not been born with a pit body to enclose this love maybe people would not have reacted in the same way. I want to thank you for all your love and dedication to me. If not for you I would have gone insane behind a 4’X 6’ concrete wall. Thank you. Do not worry about me, now my love is free to roam eternity.

Lauana Nelson, Administrative Assistant

Lauana joined the AHVMA staff in April 2013.  She holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology as well as associate's degrees in Music and Graphic Design Media.  She has a strong clerical and technological background that will be a great asset to our team.  In addition, she has worked for a veterinary office for four years in an administrative capacity. Lauana has also volunteered for her local animal shelter working with the feline population.

Being a life-long animal lover and having a long-time interest in holistic treatments herself, she looks forward to working with an organization and community that promotes the use of these modalities in animals.

Lauana grew up on a small farm, in a tiny town in Minnesota with an assortment of horses, pigs, cows, chickens, cats and dogs.  She now lives with her fiancé , step daughter and two very spoiled cats (Dinsdale and Toivo).
